        submersible was a major thing.  Simon Lake had a large idea for

        "personal submersibles."<br>

        <i>Defender</i> was launched by Newport News in 1906.  According

        to Friedman's book <i>U.S. Submarines Through 1945</i>, it was

        used in Lake's treasure hunting before being abandoned in 1937

        and scuttled in 1946.<br>
