<p>I think the savings may come from the amount of metal required to seat/hold the conical viewport vs a flat one.</p>

<p>As in with flat viewport you've got to support a portion of the inside face, where as with a conical viewport the tapered sides</p>
<p>provide support. Seems like it could be less weight for the same view-able range.</p>
<p></p>
<p>Or may be it just looked better / lower profile / etc. with the conical viewport on the hatch.</p>
