Basically it would be a corrosion triggered release. Every time you go on a planned dive you insert a anode type material ( a bi-metal corrosion bolt) which would be scheduled to corrode out in what ever time frame you want. So in addition to your regular drop weight you would also have this back up device designed to disintegrate at a calculated time. I know it would work in salt water , for fresh water you may have to use some kind of different materials. I have a friend who's father use to do some studies for Scripps and the devised some fish traps that would float to the surface after a certain time period.</div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1505341193502_17585"> </div><div>Brian</div></div>
