<html><body><span style="font-family:Verdana; color:#000000; font-size:10pt;"><div>The origin that I have heard is bananas we considered bad luck because back in the day when ships would pick up cargos of bananas, a ship would disappear only to be found again with the small crew dead. What happened was they would get bitten by banana spiders which are also known as Brazilian wondering spider. Back then no one was sure why everyone died, but the thing that was in common was they were carrying bananas. When I was a second mate in the Florida Keys on a topsail schooner, I always threw them overboard if one managed to have gotten smuggled. It was amazing though how when something really bad happened, you would always find one on board after the fact that some unknowing tourist would bring on. I know it sounds like rubbish, but there are a few superstitions that really do hold true on the ocean.</div>

<DIV dir=ltr>My professor of naval architecture in college was a crusty old merchant marine captain whose course was 50 percent naval architecture and 50 percent salty anecdotes. Many of his stories came about because he used to carry bananas, and when you have a cargo of bananas the slightest delay becomes a crisis because the load rots within days. I wonder if that is why bananas are considered bad luck!
