Since I have an old Ideal Arc 300 amp Lincoln welder at my place and no TIG available that the reason to go with the stick weld. And yes it is 516 70 that is being welded. He's doing the key hole weld with for the root pass. I was doing some of the fill passes with the 7018 with my welder looking over my shoulder, I'm getting much better at it.

Brian

--- personal_submersibles@psubs.org wrote:

From: Daniel Lance via Personal_Submersibles <personal_submersibles@psubs.org>
To: Personal Submersibles General Discussion <personal_submersibles@psubs.org>
Subject: Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] root pass
Date: Mon, 5 May 2014 05:22:09 -0400

Brian,
7010 is a good choice if you choose to do a smaw (stick ) root pass . I would refrain from using 6010 because of its lower tensile strength especially if you are welding 516 gr 70. Have you considered TIG welding your root passes ? 70s filler wire would be best in that case.
