Brian,
looking at your picture; if your motors develop say 100lb thrust,
then depending on how things are set up internally, the back
section would be trying to separate from the centre section
with 100lb force on it. Then in reverse it would be either pulling those
two sections together or trying to pull the centre & front sectiong
apart.
Just mentioning this in case it effects your decision to weld.
If there is not much room between the motor & casing, be careful
not to overheat the motor magnets or windings if welding.
You could try epoxying in the join & wrapping round the join with
fibreglass tape & epoxy. ( bandage option) You might want to do
this as a back up if the o-ring doesn't work.
